According to the recent reports, to keep up with the demands, there is a need for 90,000 new truck drivers. But there is another disheartening news that by 2026, there would be a shortage of almost 174,000 drivers in the USA. What does this mean? Evidently, we need more women in the trucking industry to fill the shortage. But why aren’t our women attracted to this sector of employment?

Women are found to be more attentive and cautious behind the wheel. Data has it that when compared to male truck drivers, female truck drivers tend to remain with the company for a longer time, have fewer preventable accidents, drive more miles, and log more hours. Thus, boosting the companies’ bottom lines.

FASTag is the best solution to these problems. Let’s get familiar with FASTag and its importance.

Road trips are wonderful to experience and we all love them. May it be for business or for fun, roadways are the most used mode of traveling. The road trip becomes a dream come true when you travel through the connected Indian highways.

The problem faced on this beautiful highway is the long queue at the toll booth. The main reason is the slow manual payment process.

What is FASTag?

FASTag is a reloadable, electronic tag that uses RFID technology for easy toll payment.

Prepaid or savings accounts linked to the tag facilitate payments. The tag, attached to the vehicle’s windscreen, is read using FASTag readers. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH) has introduced this tag for all private and commercial vehicles. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will operate the payment process.

These tags do not have a validity period, so the renewal process is also eliminated here.

Nitin Gadkari who is the Road Transport and Highway Minister of India has declared that from 15th January 2020 onwards FASTag will be mandatory for all vehicles. Moreover, NHAI will provide these tags for free at all toll plazas, RTOs, and transport hubs until 15th January 2020. The fleet owners will only have to link the tags to their bank account for the payment.

Documents required for FASTag…

You can create a FASTag account by visiting any Point of Sale (POS) location at a toll plaza or any issuer agency like banks. The customer will have to submit the listed document along with the application for:

FASTag:

  1. Registration certificate of the vehicle
  2. Passport-size photo of the fleet owner
  3. KYC document of the owner

Individual: A passport-size photo along with ID and address proof from the following list:

  1. Driving license
  2. Pan Card
  3. Voter ID
  4. Passport
  5. Aadhar Card

Corporate Customers will have to contact their POS to know their required documents.

Benefits of using it…

  • Paperless

The use of paper is eliminated as you will receive an SMS every time your fleet passes through a toll plaza. This will not only reduce paper but also help to manage the bills.

  • Easy Recharging

You can easily recharge your FASTag with NEFT, RTGS, credit card, debit card, net banking, or any other online banking procedure. It is as simple as recharging your mobile phone or DTH connection online.

  • Online Portal

You can easily check your payment statement by sign-in on the FASTag customer portal. 

Last but not least…

One FASTag cannot be used in two or more fleets. This means you have to buy different FASTags for all your fleet.

Original documents should be provided while submitting the FASTag application.

According to the reports of the Economic Times, the fleet owners have to pay twice the normal rate at the toll booth if their fleet does not have FASTag.

Tram is one of the most useful modes of public transport in the UK. The usage of trams began in 1860 in London, the horses drew these trams. With the passing of years, trams started running with steam and then with electricity.

But with the increase in usage of Tram, the accident cases also increased.

After the Croydon tram crash occurred in November 2016, the UK government decided to find a solution for public safety. This led to the death of 7 and injured over 60 innocent people. This accident was caused as the tram was traveling at the speed of 43.5mph while it reached the curve before the Sandilands stop in Croydon. The investigators said that the required speed limit in the area was 12mph.

After further inquiry, the Rail Accidents Investigation Branch (RAIB) suggested 15 recommendations for safety along with the automatic braking system. The other recommendations included speed reduction, speed monitoring, and signs at each turning, and improvement in the customer complaint procedure.

Now, the UK will get its first automatic braking tram service in London. These systems will automatically apply brakes whenever the tram exceeds the speed limit in a particular location.

This system will work along with the warning sign and speed monitoring system added in 2017, used to know about the driver’s distraction and tiredness.

RAIB also found that the driver was taking a nap due to his tiredness. This pointed out the need to find a solution to help the driver. So, the government has fitted the cat’s eye in the tunnel and chevrons have been painted to help the driver. The cat’s eye is a pair of reflective spheres that marks the center of the track for the driver’s attention. Chevron is a safety warning strip painted yellow and black color.

These safety measures with an automatic braking system will ensure public security in the tram. These methods will help to reduce tram crashes.

Now, let’s wait and see these trams running in London to know the results. It’s time for all the countries of the world to get similar or better solutions for the safety of public transport.

Most of our trip revolves around GPS. The majority of people around the globe know what’s GPS and its use. 

A short definition to have a glance can be “GPS or Global positioning satellite navigation system used to know the position of an object which is owned by US government and operated by United States Air Force.” 

Other known navigation systems of the world are GLONASS of Russia, BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) of China, and Galileo of the European Union will are scheduled to be fully operational by 2020. India is a progressive country and under the “Made in India” campaign made our own navigation system “NavIC”. Let’s understand in detail if our NavIC will be useful for the world or not.

NavIC is the operational name of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). It stands for Navigation with Indian Constellation which is derived from the word navik which also means sailor or navigator in Sanskrit and many other Indian languages.

It is a satellite navigation system that provides real-time position with time. This system extends from India to 1,500 km around it and will extend to more areas in the future. NavIC has been in orbit since 2018 and was about to start its service in the same year. But due to the failure of a satellite new date will be soon decided.

It will be providing two types of operational services:

  • Standard Positioning Service (SPS): This service will be open to all public users.
  • Restricted Service (RS): This service is encrypted for authorized users including the military.

Why did NavIC come into existence?

In the 1999 Kargil War against Pakistan, the Indian military sought GPS data from nearby regions. The US government’s navigation system could have provided the information, but they denied it. The significance of having India’s own navigation system became apparent during the Kargil War.

And then, ISRO in less than 2 years brought the country closer to the goal with IRNSS.

Which are its segments?

IRNSS is divided into 3 segments:

Space Segment: This segment consists of a constellation with 7 satellites. From which 3 are GEO(Geostationary, earth, orbit or geosynchronous) and 4 GSO(Geosynchronous orbit). GEO is used for telecommunication and GSO is a communication satellite used for keeping satellite in view of its station and receivers.

Ground Segment: This segment is useful for the operation and maintenance purposes of the IRSS constellation. They are;

  • IRNSS Spacecraft Control Facility (IRSCF)
  • ISRO Navigation Centre (INC)
  • IRNSS Range and Integrity Monitoring Stations (IRIMS)
  • IRNSS Network Timing Centre (IRNWT)
  • IRNSS CDMA Ranging Stations (IRCDR)
  • Laser Ranging Stations
  • IRNSS Data Communication Network(IRDCN)

User Segment: They design it with the receiver and antennas to capture the IRNSS signals. The user segment comprises two types of receivers which are:

  • Single-frequency IRNSS receiver that receives SPS/RS signal at L5 or S-band frequency. It is capable of doing corrections in the ionosphere.
  • Dual-frequency IRNSS receiver which receives SPS/RS signal in both L5 and S-band frequencies can track more than one radio signal from different satellites with various signals.

  • Land, Sky, and Water Navigation
  • Disaster Management
  • Vehicle GPS tracking and efficient fleet management
  • Integration with Smartphones and other handheld devices
  • Precise timing
  • Mapping and accurate GPS data capturing
  • Real-time Visual and Audio navigation for drivers

Remember the time when the autonomous cars were just an idea and the hot topic of the automotive world?

But when these Autonomous cars or self-driving cars were put into test by various automotive giants, its very safety was a questionable factor.

Though data suggests that self-driving cars are a far safer option than human-driven cars, the consumers around that world find themselves to be unsafe while driving an autonomous vehicle.

It was estimated that there were over 40,000 fatal traffic accidents that took place in US roads in 2017, but out of them, 90% of them were caused due to human error.

As per reports more than half of the Americans think autonomous cars are unsafe than traditional cars.

Also, after the two fatal incidents that involved self-driving cars, the speculations and skepticism about these cars only increased.

In 2016, a Tesla car which was on autopilot was crushed by a truck causing the death of the car’s driver. Here, we must understand that Tesla autopilot is used to assist the driver for better driving experience and not used for completely handing over the control of the vehicle to this.

Also in 2018, an Uber-self driving car testing was proven fatal for a 49-year-old pedestrian.

Though these accidents happened in an autonomous car, as per investigation it appeared that the accident happened partially due to human error.

Bad news for the investors

These facts certainly say that when it comes to buying self-driving cars, consumers are willing to stay off guard.

This is quite bad news for the companies who invested hugely in this sector of the automobile.

But then, if people get acquainted with this new technology, there could be a rise in the number of self-driving vehicles on the road.

Who is to be blamed?

This question is certainly difficult to answer has it completely depends upon the circumstances.

Though most of the accidents attributed to human error as the reason, factors such as extreme weather conditions and the way other

human-drivers behaves such as breaking traffic rules,  etc actually mattered.

As per data, even though there were 38 accidents that happened with self-driving cars, apart from only one case all rest of them was caused due to human error.

Are our roads ready for autonomous vehicles?

It is crucial to make our roads ready first for the autonomous vehicles before starting to drive or create awareness about it.

In places with an increased number of human-driven vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, driving using self-driven vehicles can be quite a challenge.

We know accidents aren’t preventable but to some extent detecting the cause and avoiding it may be possible. Even amidst these arguments;  the concept of self-driving cars still induces excitement and imagination thus raising hope for more such cars on the roads.
